Passports and visas
Visa On 12 December 2023 the President of Kenya announced that Kenya would be visa-free from January 2024. Visitors to Kenya are now required to apply online for an electronic travel authorisation in advance of travel. Some exemptions apply and can be found in full on the website of the Kenyan Civil Aviation Authority. Travellers who currently hold a valid visa can continue to travel using their visa until its expiry. Your specific passport and visa requirements, and other immigration requirements are your sole responsibility and you should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates of the countries in which you are planning to travel.

Passport validity Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into Kenya. Make sure you have two blank pages in your passport on arrival.
Transfer Time
The transfer time from Nairobi Airport to your hotel in Nairobi is approximately 30 minutes, depending on the traffic.
Currency
Kenyan shilling (KES) US Dollars and Kenya Shillings are accepted widely. However if you have GBP and EUR they will be accepted too. Lots of places change currency. The bills at the lodges can also be paid by credit cards. The price was always more favourable in the local currency and it was necessary to have small notes – 100 or 200 KES for tipping of porters, housekeeping etc. The best way to get the local currency is using one of the ATM’s at the airport.
Gratuities
We suggest a Group Collection to cover guides, transfer drivers, and hotel staff of £60.00 per person. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions. For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate % to add on.
Included Programme
A sightseeing programme is included in your touring package. Please note
  • The journeys between parks in the 4WD land cruisers are long and some approx 6 hours long but with 2 stops.
  • You have to be fit and agile to get in the 4WD land cruisers and be able to travel for a long time.
  • Game drives in the 4WD land cruisers last around 2hr
  • A reasonable level of fitness/mobility is required as we include plenty of sightseeing/travelling, some with early starts.
  • The order of the itinerary and events may be subject to change
  • Plastic bags are banned in Kenya they are not to be brought in or carried
  • Hairdryers were available in all lodges except the Keekorok Lodge in Masai Mara. This is also the only lodge where the power is switched off at night. A torch is useful.
  • Traditionally, between the months of July and October it is thought to be the best time to witness the great migration, although this is very much dependent on the rainfall and is never guaranteed. The price difference on our September trip is reflective for this time of year.
Optional Excursion
Full details of all the excursions available will be advised at the Information meeting. Prices may vary, depending on numbers etc and are only a guideline. Your Tour Leader will be happy to arrange these for you but may not necessarily accompany you. Please also note that prices are dependent on minimum numbers and may cost more if the minimum is not reached.

Hot Air Balloon flight over the Mara Plains followed by a bubbly bush breakfast £450 per person if booked before departure and approx. USD $505  if booked locally.

You can also visit the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant orphanage before our late evening flight home. It costs approx USD $80 per person (entrance fees+ Nairobi National Park entrance fees + transfer) and has to be booked locally.

Prices may vary, depending on numbers etc and are only a guideline. This is very popular excursion with number restrictions for animal welfare therefore subject to availability.
Dress Code
The emphasis is on casual clothing for throughout. Comfortable shoes or walking boots are recommended. Dressing in layers and waterproofs to allow for changes in the weather is recommended. Please bring some warm clothing for example a fleece and warm outer jacket for the evenings and early mornings. On safari, it is advisable to wear long sleeves and trousers to provide protection against insect bites. On safari avoid clothes with very bright colours as this may irritate the animals, preferably wear clothes with brown, khaki or beige colours. Binoculars are also recommended. A cap or wide brimmed hat to protect from the sun and sunglasses are recommended.
