Why Greece?

When it comes to summer sun the Greek islands have it all. Sun-drenched beaches, whitewashed villages, harbourside tavernas and peacock-blue seas and fish suppers for a song… these simple pleasures have been wooing visitors for decades.

The beauty of Greece is that its food, culture and very authentic brand of hospitality is very accessible and needn’t cost an arm and a leg. In Greece family-run hotels go with the territory and whether it’s Gregory and Kiki in Corfu, or the Drossos family in Santorini, Solos guests are assured the warmest of welcomes by our longstanding hosts.

With access to a pool or beach (preferably both!) Greece is somewhere you can kick back in simple, comfy accommodation and enjoy delicious, home-cooked food and relax or explore to your heart’s content.

Where should you go?

“Quintessential Greece,” for many, is an island group known as the Cyclades, which lies between the mainland and Crete, and is where you’ll find the likes of Paros, Mykonos and the World Heritage Site of Delos. It’s also home to Santorini, whose iconic old town, or ‘chora’ sits like a jumble of sugar cubes atop a caldera that rises sharply from the sea. Scenic Kefalonia offers plenty of invigorating walks, while the Ionian Island of Zakynthos is known for its churches, monasteries and sugar-white sand.

Tempting though it is to do nothing all day, exploring is essential! As well as sunset cruises by traditional caique, island hopping and swims in turquoise bays, it’s a truly rewarding place to walk – those views! – and especially when you factor in Greece’s wealth of impressive historical and archaeological sites.

Western Crete’s Samaria Gorge slices through the White Mountains and Corfu is home to the Durrell Trails and some spectacular sea walks. Lush, green Zakynthos was chosen as the site for Greece’s first marine park, and is a breeding site for loggerhead sea turtles, while Santorini has some of the best sunset bars in Greece.

Ros recommends…

At Solos we trust our experienced Tour Leaders to select the best activities, tours, tavernas and walks for our groups. We asked our popular host Ros, for her top tip for Greece in 2022.

“I love all the islands – each one offers something different which makes it impossible to choose one over another,” she says.

“One of my favourite islands for excursions is Santorini, where there is so much to enjoy. There’s a walk around the caldera to the beautiful cliffside village of Oia, swimming at the coastal village of Kamari and a visit to a monastery in the mountains (we can see it from the hotel roof terrace) where you can buy organic product from the monks. We also visit a winery and enjoy some nibbles whilst watching the sunset.

“The other excursion we offer is a Santorini Volcano climb and a boat trip to the therapeutic hot springs off the islet of Palea Kameni. Santorini really does have it all.”
