Day Two: Golden Circle Day Tour & Northern Lights

Day Two: Golden Circle Day Tour & Northern Lights

This day excursion introduces us to some of the most interesting and best-known natural phenomena in Iceland, along the infamous Golden Circle route. It includes the Geysir area, Gullfoss waterfall and Thingvellir National Park. We start our day by driving to Thingvellir National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) which holds a special place in the hearts of Icelanders, with many historically important events having taken place here through the centuries. At Thingvellir, the Icelandic parliament Althingi was founded in 930 and in the year 1000 Icelanders adopted Christianity. Geologically, it is also unique. This is where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates are slowly drifting apart and you can clearly see the effects of the plate movements, with open cracks and fissures visible in the earth’s crust. After taking a walk through the exceptional landscape of Thingvellir, we continue our journey to the famous geothermal area around the hot springs of Geysir and Strokkur. Here we will see numerous small springs boiling and bubbling, and the Strokkur hot spring - which ejects its column of water high into the air every 5 – 10 minutes or so.
From here, it's just a short drive towards the majestic and beautiful Gullfoss waterfall that tumbles into a deep gorge. Following the road through the fertile landscape and farmlands of South Iceland, we return to Reykjavik. In the evening, we head out of Reykjavík in search of the epic Northern Lights, gazing at a night sky completely free of city lights, to enhance the beauty of the green glow. When conditions are favourable, this mesmerizing natural phenomenon, also known as Aurora Borealis, can be observed during the winter months. Please note that the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and sightings therefore cannot be guaranteed. Depending on weather conditions, this tour might be moved to a different date/time as it gets closer to departure.

Today we spend the day exploring the many attractions the capital of Iceland has to offer. As we walk around Reykjavik, we can visit Hallgrimskirkja church, one of Reykjavík’s most famous monuments. When exploring the historical city centre, we will not only find the Town Hall, the Parliament building and the modernistic Harpa concert hall. Not to mention an impressive number of museums, cafés, restaurants and shops.

Passport & Visa Information

Passport validity requirements:

To travel to Iceland, you must follow the Schengen area passport requirements. To enter Iceland (and all Schengen countries) your passport must:
  • have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive. Passports issued after 1 October 2018 are now valid for only 10 years, but for passports issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added if you renewed a passport early
  • have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave

Visa requirements:

You can travel to countries in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. This applies if you travel as a tourist
Currency
Icelandic Krona
Dress Code
Dressing in layers with warm, water/wind-proof casual daytime wear is recommended with comfortable, warm footwear, thick socks, gloves, a hat and sunglasses.
Important Information
A reasonable level of fitness/mobility is required for the sightseeing. The order of the itinerary and events may be subject to change. Northern Lights sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Gratuities
We suggest a Group Collection to cover transfer drivers, guide, and hotel staff of €15.00 per person. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions.
