Day Two: Guided Tour of Cheltenham and Tewkesbury

Day Two: Guided Tour of Cheltenham and Tewkesbury

We start our tour in Regency Cheltenham. Cheltenham developed as a spa town in the late 1700s and early 1800s. It was a popular retirement spot for the members of the East India company, who built grand houses in the latest style and spent their days taking the waters and enjoying the local social scene, which included gambling. It was said Cheltenham was the best place for a curry outside of India. A short walk around the main sites gives insight into the history of this Regency Resort.

Following this, we take the coach through the Cotswolds to Broadway.  The trip takes us through charming Cotswold villages built from the creamy limestone typical of the area. We enjoy a stop at Broadway for lunch.

Our final stop is Tewkesbury. The old town grew up around the imposing Abbey which dates back to the 1100s and the centre of Tewkesbury is a truly medieval town with half timbered houses built around a warren of courts and alleys. Tewkesbury is particularly well known for one of the most important battles of the War of the Roses, when Henry VI was defeated by Edward of the House of York. All will be revealed on a short walk of the centre.

This evening we share a three-course meal and dance the night away at a disco back at the hotel.

Location & Transport
The Mercure Gloucester Bowden Hall Hotel, Bondend Lane, Upton St Leonards, Gloucester, GL4 8ED is approximately 5 miles from junction 11A of the M5 and 4 miles from Gloucester Station. There is complimentary parking at the hotel.
Gratuities
There is often confusion on the question of gratuities, since it frequently depends on the type of holiday, location and, of course, your attitude towards tipping, as to what is normally expected. To give you a rough idea, we have given appropriate guidance below. The Tour Leader will be on hand to offer advice or suggestions if required but gratuities are offered entirely at the sole discretion of the individual. We suggest a group collection at the beginning of your holiday to cover drivers, guides, porters and hotel staff of approximately £10. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip.
Dress Code
The dress code for during the day is casual. In the evenings dress up to dance the night away. Comfortable shoes for walking and sightseeing are recommended.
Useful Information
There are stairs leading to all rooms which you must be able to manage independently.
