Day Two: Segovia

After breakfast, we meet our English-speaking guide at our hotel, before beginning a four-hour walking tour of Segovia. We’ll start at the Plaza Mayor and take in the iconic historical feature of the city—the Aqueduct of Segovia, a mighty feat of ancient Roman construction. We will visit the Segovia Cathedral, also known as The Lady of Cathedrals, the last Gothic cathedral built in Spain and a masterpiece of Basque-Castilian Gothic architecture. From there, we’ll walk through the manor houses, the palace of Enrique IV, the Jewish quarter of Segovia, Plaza de San Martín, and many other places of interest.

We’ll also visit the magical Alcazar de Segovia—a medieval castle perched atop a rocky crag at the western end of the old town, above the Eresma River. This fairytale fortress is one of the most distinctive castle-palaces in Spain and is said to have inspired Disney’s iconic castle.

This afternoon, we journey to the small town of San Ildefonso, located in the hills just outside of Segovia. Once there, we'll enjoy a guided tour of the Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso—a former summer residence of the Kings of Spain, constructed in the baroque style and surrounded by extensive ornamental gardens covering over 6 square kilometres. We will then have free time for lunch before returning to the hotel to relax and freshen up ahead of dinner.

After breakfast, we leave our hotel in Salamanca and travel by private coach to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed city of Ávila, where we will enjoy a three-hour guided tour of this impressive medieval walled city. After the tour, there will be free time to enjoy lunch and explore more of Ávila at our own pace.

We then continue by private coach to the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, an imposing historical complex and former residence of the Kings of Spain. With our guide, we’ll explore this vast and austere site—known for its Renaissance architecture, royal pantheon, basilica, and its role as both a monastery and royal palace.

Following our visit, we continue to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed city of Toledo, located in the neighbouring autonomous community of Castilla–La Mancha, where we will check-in to our hotel and relax for the evening.
