What you'll be doing

Day One: Welcome to Lithuania

Day One: Welcome to Lithuania

Upon arrival in Vilnius, we will be met by our transfer and taken to our hotel for check-in. We have the afternoon at leisure until our welcome dinner this evening.
Day Two: Old Town Vilnius

Day Two: Old Town Vilnius

After breakfast, we meet our local guide in the hotel lobby for a 2.5 to 3-hour tour that introduces us to the rich history and culture of Vilnius. We’ll explore must-see landmarks in the Old Town, including Gothic and Baroque churches, Cathedral Square, the Presidential Palace, and the Jewish Quarter. Strolling through the Gates of Dawn - a medieval city gate, we’ll wander the artistic streets of Užupis. As we walk down the narrow lanes, we’ll keep an eye out for the open-air art gallery on Literatu Street and explore the city’s narrowest alleyway. We have the rest of the day at leisure.
Day Three: Trakai Town

Day Three: Trakai Town

After breakfast, we transfer from Vilnius to the charming town of Trakai, a former medieval residence of the Lithuanian Grand Dukes. Located approximately 25 km from Vilnius and surrounded by picturesque lakes, Trakai Castle is a stunning medieval fortress situated on an island in Lake Galvė. Today, we explore the meticulously restored castle, which features a museum showcasing the region's rich history and medieval artifacts. One of the most enchanting ways to experience the magnificent Trakai Castle, is by boat on Lake Galvė. This leisurely excursion allows us to appreciate the stunning views of the legendary castle and its picturesque surroundings. After our tour, we enjoy a traditional Karaim lunch.

Once a significant and powerful hub, Trakai now enjoys a peaceful atmosphere and is recognised as a summer resort, home to just 5,000 residents. Built in the 14th century by Grand Duke Kęstutis and completed by his son, Grand Duke Vytautas, Trakai Castle served as a key defensive and administrative centre for the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Its breathtaking setting, encircled by water, enhances its allure, making it one of Lithuania's top tourist attractions.
Trakai is renowned for its Karaim community, who have lived here since the 14th century and are known for crafting 'kibinai' – the region's most famous pastries. We’ll have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in this unique culture through its culinary traditions, and savour the distinct flavours of kybyn, paired perfectly with a bowl of delicious soup, for a truly authentic experience.
Day Four: Užupis

Day Four: Užupis

Following breakfast, we head to the Monument to Adam Mickiewicz to meet our guide. In just two hours, we immerse ourselves in the fascinating history of Užupis, an independent state of artists that has transformed a neglected area into one of the most artistic spaces in Vilnius. Together, we uncover the elements and celebrations that define Užupis, unravelling the true meaning behind the statements in the Užupis Constitution.

Our tour will take us off the beaten track to explore lesser-known corners and hidden art, from captivating murals to intriguing sculptures. We'll also visit the Independence Square and Parliament, and with a bit of luck, encounter the famous Užupis cats!

Gratuities
There is often confusion on the question of gratuities, since it frequently depends on the type of holiday, location and, of course, your attitude towards tipping, as to what is normally expected. To give you a rough idea, we have given appropriate guidance below. The Tour Leader will be on hand to offer advice or suggestions if required but gratuities are offered entirely at the sole discretion of the individual. We suggest a group collection at the beginning of your holiday to cover drivers, guides, porters and hotel staff of approximately £20. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip.
