What you’ll be doing

Day One: Arrive in Tenerife

Day One: Arrive in Tenerife

Transfer to our hotel for the week, where we'll have the welcome meeting with our guide. From the dry and arid south to the humid north and its luxuriant vegetation, Tenerife is as diverse in terms of climate and topography, hence why it's often referred to as a mini continent.
Located in the middle of the island, El Teide is the highest mountain in Spain. with its subalpine and alpine region, Pico del Teide (3715m at the highest point) is the symbol of the island and can be seen from any place in Tenerife. With the Laurel forests and wild coast in the Anaga Massif, the gorges and ravines in the Teno Massif and of course, Las Cañadas del Teide National Park, Tenerife is a paradise and perfect location for a Solos hiking week.

Day Two: The Volcanic Island - Arenas Negras & Chinyero

Day Two: The Volcanic Island - Arenas Negras & Chinyero

Our first walk of the week begins in the north of the island, where we discover the area of the 300-year-old Arenas Negras volcano where we can marvel at the dramatic landscape. The volcano erupted back in 1706, destroying the island's most important harbour at Garachico, changing the size of the bay. With our route taking us through pine forests, we then head towards Chinyero, the last volcano formed on the island when it erupted in 1909. Along the way, we can imagine how the lava flowed and formed the varied landscape and our guide will explain the effect the volcanoes had on the people of Santiago del Teide a century ago.
We will see the many plants and vegetation that now grow on the slopes, such as almond trees, fig trees, and fragrant poleos - a local species of mint. Grade: Medium
  • Length of walk  8.3 miles/13.3km
  • Walking Time 4 hours approx
  • Ascent +425m
  • Descent -425m
  • Transfer Time 35 mins
  • Breakfast, Picnic Lunch & Dinner
Day Three: Hiking the Teno

Day Three: Hiking the Teno

Today we take our bus to the Teno Country Park, located in the north-west of the island and one of Tenerife’s most beautiful nature areas. Our hike takes us from the ridge of Baracan to the heart of Teno Alto, the most western village of the island. This area has kept much of its ecological, scenic and cultural wealth, largely thanks to its isolated position. Goat keeping and cheese production still remains part of the local economy.

Deep ravines, magnificent landscapes, countryside heritage, local gastronomy and lush laurel forests welcome us in the Teno mountains. Grade: Medium
  • Length of walk 6 miles/9.7km
  • Waking Time 4 hours approx
  • Ascent +500m
  • Descent -775m
  • Transfer Time 60mins
  • Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included
Day Four: Day At Leisure

Day Four: Day At Leisure

Today we can take some time to rest and enjoy the hotel's facilities. Choose to relax by the pool or perhaps stroll along the Rambla del Castro, enjoying the palm groves, hidden beaches and sea views. Or a little further afield, visit the neighbouring town of Puerto de la Cruz with its coastal promenade, shops and botanical gardens.

  • Breakfast & Dinner Included

Day Five: Anaga Biosphere Reserve

Day Five: Anaga Biosphere Reserve

Anaga Biosphere Reserve Anaga mountain range is located on the north-east of the island and has been protected following the preservation of its natural assets in harmony with local population. From Cruz del Carmen, our trail penetrates in the laurel forest, descending from lush vegetation to open fields and hamlets. The balance of the traditional use of this wood and the conservation of one of the biodiversity hotspots of the island is one of the keys of the future here. Where the vegetation clears, millions of years of erosion unveils lava dykes, varied layers of volcanic materials and offers wide views over sculpted old deep barrancos. Goat and sheep herders have used these steep slopes over centuries. The mountain path leads us to Chinamada.

This picturesque and remote village is the most popular troglodyte settlement in Tenerife. At a short distance, Mirador de Ahuaide rewards us with impressive views over marine cliffs and the coast, with our walk concluding in Las Carboneras.

Perhaps take advantage of the hotel facilities, relax by the pool or participate in an optional tour organised by our local guide to visit the longest lava tunnel in Europe, Cueva del Viento; or the Teide Observatory and the peak of Teide using Teide’s cable car. There's also the option to visit the old capital of the island, La Laguna - a UNESCO World Heritage Site and indulge yourself with a winery visit including a lunch and tasting.

Day Seven: Teide National Park

Day Seven: Teide National Park

For our final walk of the trip, we will enjoy Tenerife’s pièce de résistance - the jaw-dropping Teide National Park. 16 kilometres across the Caldera, it's filled with an abundance of colours and shapes following countless eruptions and lava flows. A must-see including the highest elevation in Spain, Mount Teide peaking at 3,715 metres(12,190 ft) above sea level and the famous symbol of the island. With the natural beauty of the landscapes and the volcanic richness, it's no wonder why the area is awarded as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

After hopping on and off the coach for several viewpoints, we then walk through the lava fields on the west of Las Cañadas, offering incredible views of Teide, Pico Viejo, the second highest volcano, and the west of the island with its lovely contrasting colours of the the black basaltic lavas, the blue sky, sea and the green of the pine forest. What to Wear
It is of paramount importance that you have the correct footwear. It is essential to wear walking boots that are comfortable and preferably lightweight, with some ankle support and a good grip. If you already have a pair of boots that you are happy walking in (including during hot/wet weather and on hard ground), then bring these along. Experience has shown that wearing 2 pairs of woollen socks adds to comfort. The weather, even in summer, is unpredictable – particularly in mountainous areas. We would therefore recommend you travel with clothing suitable for all conditions, and suggest you use the following checklist as a guideline of what to take:
  • Walking boots with good ankle support
  • Waterproofs – jacket and trousers
  • Walking poles – recommended as they provide good support for the knees, particularly on downhill sections of walks and when conditions are wet/slippery
  • Lightweight trousers and shorts with pockets
  • Walking socks – several pairs
  • Lightweight fleece or jumper
  • Hat & gloves
  • Daysack/rucksack for walking
  • Umbrella – it can be used also for protection from the sun as well as rain
  • Lightweight drinking bottle to carry water whilst walking
  • Small first aid kit – plasters, insect repellent, etc
  • Good, high factor sunscreen, sunhat and sunglasses – the sun’s strength is often multiplied in mountainous areas.
Gratuities
We suggest a Group Collection to cover transfer drivers, and hotel staff of €25.00 per person. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions. For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate % to add on.
Passport & Visa Entry
To enter the Canary Islands your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:
  • less than 10 years old on the day you enter (check the ‘date of issue’)
  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)
Check both the issue date and the expiry date in your passport. If you renewed your passport early, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. This could affect the requirement for your passport to be less than 10 years old.

A visa is not required by holders of passports endorsed “British Citizen” for stays of upto 90 days in any 180-day period. Please note that stays in other EU countries counts towards this 90 day period.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct visa, a valid passport and any other travel documents for your holiday.  All information provided relates to British citizens who hold or are entitled to apply for a British passport. For the most up-to-date visa information please visit;  Spain Foreign Advice

If you are not a British citizen and do not hold a British passport, you must make your own enquiries as to the applicable requirements.
