Imagine trekking through a jungle for three hours without a waterproof, wearing flip flops, carrying the equivalent of two adults on your back. We've been there, done that and got the leeches and backache to prove it.   

As far as solo adventure travel is concerned, we know all too well that there are places you can afford to pack the heavies. And then there are the places you most definitely don't want to tip the scales. Here's all you need to know to pack light and pack essential to prepare for almost any environment so you can spend your time enjoying the experience and soaking up the atmosphere... 

1. Wear your walking boots in at least two weeks prior to the trip to avoid having to pause mid-adventure to attend to blisters and sore feet.
2. Roll all items of clothing as tightly as you can, packing a mix of light and heavier layers with different sleeve lengths. Think sushi for your suitcase.
3. Consider how ‘essential’ each item is by doing a little research into your itinerary. Will you really need that fourth sweatshirt? Should you swap that third pair of trousers for a waterproof jacket? The first packing attempt won’t be your last. Trust us on this.  
4. Leave a little bit of space for things picked up along the way, considering what items might be better to purchase during the trip. 
5. Have a separate easily accessible compartment in your day rucksack for items you’ll use most of all. Your camera, phone and passport all need to be within reach. Not just to check in and out of accommodation. Those photo opportunities can come and go in a heartbeat so when those moments happen, the last thing you’ll be wanting to do is emptying out the contents of your bag at the side of a mountain.
